James Madison Beach - Lake Mendota

ADDRESS:
614 E. Gorham Street, Madison
DIRECTIONS:
James Madison Park
DESCRIPTION:
James Madison Park was first established as a park with lake access in 1939. Its name changed from Conklin Park to its present-day moniker in 1963. Prior to it being a city park, the area was the site of Conklin Ice House from 1854 until 1936. Ice from Lake Mendota was highly sought-after due to its thickness and lack of pollution, and was shipped as far away as New Orleans.

From 2005 through 2009, James Madison beach was closed 15 times (41 days total) for blue green algae, 3 times (7 days total) for bacteria, and once (8 days total) for both blue green algae and bacteria.
