Edge of Field Monitoring

Edge-of-field monitoring measures soil and nutrient loss directly from agricultural fields. This data helps us understand exactly how farming practices impact nearby water quality. By capturing runoff right as it leaves the field, we can evaluate the true effectiveness of conservation practices.

To get the most accurate data, this study uses a paired watershed approach. This scientific method accounts for year-to-year weather changes by comparing two similar fields side-by-side.

  • Control Field: Maintains standard farming practices throughout the entire study.
  • Treatment Field: Receives a new conservation practice (like cover crops or reduced tillage) after an initial baseline period.
